Engage Authentically: Simply Put, Be Yourself

A handful of years ago, I was invited to a conference that had nothing to do with my career at the time. It was hosted by a large tech agency, and I was surrounded by coders, software architects, and executives. On day one, I tried desperately to fit in. I nodded along, acted like I understood what SaaS and APIs meant, and pretended I belonged. I went to bed feeling like an imposter who could not make a meaningful connection. On day two, something shifted. I decided to be myself. When someone used terminology I did not know, I asked questions instead of pretending. Curiosity broke the façade. Instead of assuming I was in tech, people began asking what I did. When I shared that I was a fire captain, conversations immediately changed. Posturing became authenticity. No joke, by the end of the night, I was drinking $600 glasses of Scotch and smoking fine cigars. Our careers were vastly different, yet we found common ground through honesty and curiosity. On day three, I was invited to give a breakout session on leadership for their executives. That surreal experience taught me something I see play out every day. On LinkedIn, in boardrooms, at events, and across industries, people are “networking” without actually connecting. They pitch. They posture. They perform. Then they wonder why their relationships remain shallow and their influence never compounds. This week in The Mike Drop, we explore the fifth element of the CONNECT Framework: Engage Authentically. Here is the truth many professionals overlook: You cannot fake genuine interest. You cannot outsource sincerity. You cannot build influence without authenticity. Authentic engagement is not a technique. In fact, it's the opposite. It sounds like this: I do not need to be who I think you want me to be. I will show up as who I actually am. When you lead with authenticity, you give others permission to do the same. You transform surface interactions into real conversations. You become memorable because you are real in a world full of performance. Engaging Authentically is not about being perfectly polished. It is about being consistently human. As you move through this week, try this: Pay attention to where you're performing instead of connecting. Catch yourself explaining instead of listening. Replace posturing with sincerity. You will notice something quickly. The more you are yourself, the more doors open. The more you listen, the more people want to talk. The more authentically you engage, the more naturally influence follows. Authenticity is not a soft skill. It is a competitive advantage. Next week, we will explore the sixth element in the CONNECT Framework - Creating Win-Wins. Until then, engage with people the way you wish others engaged with you. Connection begins there.
